Soldier Throws Away and Then Retrieves $800,000 Ticket

Soldier Throws Away and Then Retrieves $800,000 Ticket
After nearly three weeks, someone holding a Powerball ticket worth $800,000 has finally come forward. A 49-year-old soldier (who wishes to remain anonymous) stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, discovered that his $10 investment paid off in a big way after matching all five white ball numbers from the Wednesday, August 16th drawing.

“It still hasn’t sunk in,” he said about his win. “I have been truly blessed. And to think he threw the winning ticket away. While cleaning out his car at a service station, he found a stack of Powerball® tickets inside the door. After throwing them away, he decided to get them back out of the trash. “Something just told me to get them back out,” he said. He then walked into the store to have them checked. After scanning the ticket and printing off the winning numbers, the clerk informed him he had won $800,000. “I immediately signed the back of the ticket, folded it and put it in my wallet,” he told lottery officials. He then drove directly to Kentucky lottery headquarters in Louisville to find out that it was closed for the Labor Day holiday.

The soldier picked his own numbers based on family ages and football and basketball uniform numbers. He typically buys Powerball® tickets once a month and always pays the extra dollar for Power Play. The soldier has served in the military for nearly 30 years and plans to retire soon. When asked what he plans to do with his winnings, he said, “Do the right thing and help the less fortunate.”

New York Lottery Numbers Game Sets Record

New York Lottery Numbers Game Sets Record
Pays More Than $8.3 Million to Twenty-Five Thousand Players in One Day

Schenectady, NY New York Lottery Daily Numbers players had a major pay day last week winning more than $8.3 million playing the 4-4-4 and 1-2-3 number combinations on the Thursday, June 15th midday and evening drawings.

The amazing $8.3 million payout is a new record for the New York Lottery Daily Numbers game,” said New York Lottery Director Nancy A. Palumbo. “The popular number combinations of 4-4-4 and 1-2-3 were drawn during Numbers Bonus Week which means not only did New Yorkers win big, but they also took home a 600 to 1 payout. That represents an increase in prizes of over 20 percent.”
During the midday drawing last Thursday, 9,524 players who picked the 4-4-4 combination won $4,688,940 when their numbers came in. In the evening, 16,236 winners who played the numbers 1-2-3 walked away with $3,695,200. Number selections are usually capped when they reach a $5 million payout liability, but neither of these popular number combinations had been sold out for the day.
The $8.3 million payday last week beat the record set on August 26, 2002 when the midday 6-6-6 combination was drawn paying out $1.18 million and the evening 2-2-2 winning numbers paid out nearly $5 million, setting the former daily prize payout record at $6.18 million.
The Daily Numbers game was introduced to New Yorkers on September 8, 1980. During fiscal year 2005-2006, sales on the Daily Numbers game reached $827 million, generating $333 million for education. Since it was launched in 1980, the Daily Numbers game has generated more than $5.25 billion for primary and secondary education on sales of over $15 billion.
The New York Lottery the largest lottery in the country and the sixth largest in the world, has generated more than $29 billion in revenue to help support education in New York State, including a record $2.2 billion in fiscal year 2005-2006 on revenues of $6.8 billion.
